Grading cultures differ enormously: a French 16/20, a German 1.3, and an Indian 8.7 CGPA are all elite results that a naive percentage conversion would butcher. Each mapping below follows how professional credential evaluators band the system, and the converter reports a range because your exact figure depends on the evaluator and the college.

Indian boards grade far more stingily than US schools, and evaluators know it: an 8.5 CGPA from a strict board reads like an A average. Multiplying CGPA by 0.4 understates you; these bands follow how credential evaluators actually map it.

A 75% from a strict Indian board is not a US C. First division (60%+) has traditionally mapped to a B or better, and top boards cluster well below 90% for their strongest students.

Per subject, a 7 reads as an A/4.0, a 6 as roughly 3.7, a 5 as low A-/B+. The world average diploma score sits around 30, so a 38+ is genuinely rare and admissions knows it.

Based on the modified Bavarian formula evaluators use, where a 1.0 maps to 4.0 and the scale runs downward. Fewer than 2% of German students finish at 1.0, which US admissions offices increasingly understand.

French grading barely uses the top of the scale: a 16/20 moyenne is an elite result and an 18 is exceptional. A direct percentage conversion would be badly unfair, and evaluators treat mention très bien accordingly.

How do I convert a 10-point CGPA to a US GPA?
Not by multiplying by 0.4. Indian boards grade more strictly than US high schools, so evaluators map bands: a 9.0+ CGPA reads around 3.8 to 4.0, an 8.0 to 8.9 around 3.6 to 3.8, and a 7.0 to 7.9 around 3.2 to 3.6. A strict linear conversion systematically undersells students from harsh-grading boards.
Do US colleges convert international grades themselves?
Yes. Every college that admits international students evaluates foreign credentials, either in-house or through services like WES, and they evaluate in context: they know a French 16/20 or a German 1.5 is an elite result. You usually do not need to convert your GPA on the application; this tool is for knowing where you stand.
What GPA do I put on the Common App as an international student?
Report your grades in your own school's scale; the Common App asks your school's grading scale and your counselor confirms it. Do not convert your grades yourself on the application unless a college explicitly asks for a converted figure.
Is a German Abitur 2.0 a good GPA for US admissions?
Yes. A 2.0 Abitur sits in the top portion of German graduates and maps to roughly a 3.2 to 3.6 US GPA under the modified Bavarian formula, and admissions offices familiar with the Abitur read it with that strictness in mind.
